Nicous D’Andre Spring: Illegally Detained, Fatally Abandoned
This piece was co-authored by Ted Rutland and Ricardo Lamour in reaction to the involuntary manslaughter charge laid against Sébastien Bossé, unit chief at Bordeaux Prison, in relation to the death of Nicous D’Andre Spring, as reported by multiple media outlets.
Nicous was a 21-year-old Black man from Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Côte-des-Neiges, illegally detained at Bordeaux—the largest provincial prison in Quebec—brutalized by correctional officers under Bossé’s orders, and left without assistance until he died.
While individuals must answer for their actions, institutional accountability remains overdue.
