Joint letter of condolences for Justice Yvonne Mokgoro friends and family

To Justice Mokgoro ́s family and colleagues,

All the members of UNARC and the International Coalition for People of African Descent-ICPAD are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, who was the first Chairperson of EMLER (International Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in the context of Law Enforcement).

We were honored by the opportunity we had to meet her, some of us in person and others virtually. For us she was an inspiration, an example to follow, and her career was an impeccable example of hard work, discipline and purpose.

We want to echo the words of her son Ithateng who said: “Our family, and the country at large, has lost a principled servant, whose commitment to justice will continue to shape our society”. In this spirit we know that although she will not be with us in person, her legacy and inspiration will live in our hearts and in the work that we will continue to do for justice worldwide for Africans
and people of African descent. We celebrate her contributions, her life and her achievements.

We are sending our deepest condolences to her family and friends and to the many people in South Africa and around the world who are saddened by this great loss.

Justice Mokgoro will always be remembered!

May she rest in power.

All the members of the UNARC and ICPAD Coalition.
